Talking story is an old, gentle art in Hawai‘i. It is more than just conversation, though it is also that. Talking story is a way of connecting, of sharing wisdom across generations, of teaching without lecturing, of caring and healing without prescriptions. It is how we listen, not just with our ears, but with our hearts.

Through talking story, we weave the threads of those who’ve gone before us into the fabric of our lives, ensuring their voices are never lost.

This book is born from such conversations.

Over the course of a year, more than two decades ago, I was blessed to sit with six extraordinary women—Chiyo, Rosie, Gennie, Eleanor, Mrs. Duvauchelle, and Faith—nurses who lived and served in a way that left deep, living roots in their communities. Born and raised in Hawai‘i in the early part of the twentieth century, they did not seek the spotlight. They did not call themselves heroes. But through their words and their stories, they quietly reveal a life of courage, resilience, aloha, and service.
